Is it a fresh enjoyable sci fi civ game with good prospects? Absolutely. Is it perfect or better than civ 5 with BNW? No. But like civ5 every expansion dramatically increases the playability and depth (of an already great game) and, as luck has it, an expansion comes out tomorrow. If you're the kind to sink deep into strategy guides and stuff than this (like vanilla civ5 was) is a bit underwhelming and bland. If you play with friends, they won't either. A lot feels like a great idea that wasn't thought out.Įxcept! If you play fairly casually, you'd never notice or care. Resources seem either over abundant or impossible to find, with no real worrying involved. Spying and trade are omnipresent but not really fun. There are 5 victory conditions that are all a bit meh, and it really seems to come down to how fast you can build a victory condition based wonder. Some things, like the voice overs, get monotonous.
Sid meiers civilization beyond earth rising tide addon mod#
It doesn't do anything mechanically that a hefty mod to cob v couldn't. If you like sci fi and Civ, there's no reason to not like this game. The affinities and aliens and other little things are great ways to bring old concepts into a new light.

The tech web means less linear tech development and more diverse options. Much of the tech feels like an expansion of civ era techs. Sponsors (the Civs) are characterful and fresh, linked both to earth analogues and futurist thinking. Affinities mirror civ V ideaologies, and develop their own unique victory conditions. The units, the mechanics, and the sponsors are all done in a way that isn't simply more of the same. However, I disagree and think it's a fine (though agreeably not as deep) game, so let me try.įirst, it's novel. I've often heard it phrased as a really awesome mod but an underwhelming standalone game.
